Butterfly Dampers
Wafer/Butterfly Dampers
Wafer/Butterfly dampers are used in round duct applications and are valued for their simple design, quick closing capability, versatility, and cost efficiency. Fox Equipment wafer and butterfly dampers are custom-engineered for industrial systems and are primarily used for flow control, balancing, and low-leakage isolation in systems that handle clean gas or light particulate.

Sizes & Configurations
- Custom sizes available from 4” diameter up to approximately 180” diameter
- Designed for round duct applications
- Single-blade and multi-blade wafer configurations available depending on application
- Custom configurations available for unique system requirements
Materials of Construction
Fox Equipment wafer/butterfly dampers are available in a wide range of materials to match system conditions, including:
- Damper body: Carbon steel, stainless steel, high-temperature alloys
- Blade: Carbon steel, stainless steel, specialty alloys
- Seals: Selected based on temperature, leakage, and service conditions
All materials are selected to meet temperature, pressure, and corrosion requirements of the application.
Wafer / Butterfly Damper Options
Seal & Seat Options
Available sealing options include Swing-Thru, Tadpole, Metal Seat, and Blade Seals, allowing the damper to meet leakage and performance requirements.
Actuation Options
Manual lever, manual gearbox, pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic actuation options are available and selected based on damper size and control requirements.
Performance & Design
Wafer/butterfly dampers are designed primarily for balancing and isolation, with multi-blade wafer designs available for modulation where required.
- Temperature range: -50°F to 2200°F
- Pressure range: -138” W.G. to +138” W.G.
Fox Equipment dampers are engineered with a 300% safety factor to accommodate minor installation misalignment and unexpected system debris. Bearings and linkage are mounted externally, allowing for longer service life and simplified maintenance.
Expected service life is approximately 20 years, with typical maintenance intervals of every six months, depending on application conditions.
Applications & Limitations
Wafer/butterfly dampers perform best in systems handling clean gas or light particulate and are commonly used for system balancing and isolation across all industries.
These dampers are not intended for heavy particulate or abrasive service. While they can tolerate small amounts of dust, guillotine dampers are recommended for severe particulate applications. For systems experiencing large temperature swings, louver dampers may be a better solution.
Standards, Support & Documentation
Fox Equipment wafer/butterfly dampers are tested and fabricated to recognized industry standards, including AMCA 510-03, AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, and are CWB certified.
Engineering support, specification assistance, and custom quotations are available. Fox Equipment provides 3D approval drawings with all projects and can supply STEP files upon request. Long-term service, spare parts, and accessories—including bearings, packing materials, actuators, and limit switches—are available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I determine the correct size wafer/butterfly damper for my system?
Fox Equipment wafer and butterfly dampers are available in custom sizes ranging from 4” to approximately 180” diameter. Final sizing is determined by duct diameter, system pressure, temperature, and application requirements. Engineering support is available to assist with proper selection.
What are wafer/butterfly dampers typically used for?
Wafer/butterfly dampers are primarily used for balancing and isolation in round duct systems. Multi-blade wafer designs can be used for modulation where required.
What standards and certifications do Fox Equipment wafer/butterfly dampers meet?
Fox Equipment wafer/butterfly dampers are tested per AMCA 510-03, fabricated using AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX welding standards, and the company is CWB certified.
Are drawings or CAD files available?
Fox Equipment provides 3D approval drawings for customer review and can supply STEP files upon request.
What information is required to request a quote?
To request a quote, we typically need a few key details such as the application, system design temperature and pressure, system flow (ACFM), and preferred type of actuation. You can also upload drawings or specifications to help our team better understand your project.
